Part of the wisdom behind fasting it to expose the body to its own inherent weakness. A human refrains from food and water for a scant number of hours and he or she is afflicted by fatigue and irritability.

This is meant to draw our attention to how truly dependent we are upon Allah for our constant sustenance and maintenance. Without regularly fasting, we begin to take such constant care for granted..
