Zakah is essentially giving away money that isn't yours, except it doesn't actually leave your possession.

How is it giving away money that's not yours? Because Allah has simply lent you that money for a short time so you may use it to obtain everlasting paradise.

How come it doesn't actually leave your possession? Because, as the Prophet told us, there are angels who petition Allah, saying “Compensate every giver for what he/she gave, and ruin every miser for what he/she withheld.” (Adapted from Abi Abdillah Muhammad ibn Abd Al-Rahman Al-Bukhari's Mahasin al-Islam)
